Ive been playing the PC version of this game for years, and for those unfamiliar with Ingenious, it really is any excellent puzzle game that involves turn-based strategy. Its easy to learn, slow to master, and fun. Ive spent countless hours playing it.
I was thrilled to see that it was brought to the iPhone/iPod and enjoy it on this platform too. The interface is easy to use, and the game is more or less a faithful version of the one I know and enjoy.
A few caveats, though.
I wish the developers would make some sort of awards system whereby players try to meet various milestones, or compete against different personalities. As it stands the game is unembellished (much like the PC version) and some framing of the game within some sort of larger achievement scheme would add to the already good replay value. There is a tournament mode, but it feels more or less a uniform gaming experience. Where are even the basic gaming statisics?
You only play against one computer opponent. Typically when I play on my PC, I play against three computer opponents, as this is more of a challenge. Perhaps there isnt enough screen space to allow for this comfortably on the iPhone.
Lastly, it is very regretable that there is no multiplayer online or using wifi or Bluetooth -increasingly standard features of these sorts of games. This is really unfortunate as this is precisely the type of game that is enhanced by a human opponent, and playing the AI of the game will eventually leave you cold and wanting more.
All and all, a very good game, and certainly worth the price. Still, the potential for excellence is on the horizon with some moderate updates. Ill keep my fingers crossed.
